NC Architecture & Interior Design

Our NC Architecture & Interior Design course is an introduction to the world of design and the built environment. Our students this year have done amazingly well, despite the restrictions they encountered during a world pandemic! Their skills have grown - hand rendering, 3D visualisation, project development - and they are now confident designers in their own right. We couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and dedication to the course and know they will succeed in whatever path they take going forward. We hope you enjoy the work they have produced this year!

Creativity Challenge - Design Your Own Wallpaper

Each year we focus on building our students digital skills. This year they were tasked with designing a wallpaper based on an architectural movement that they had studied such as Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Post Modernism etc. They then had to use their digital skills to apply that wallpaper to a virtual room. We were so pleased with the fabulous results!

Sketching & Drawing

Sketching and drawing is an essential skill for an architect & designer. The students work on a number of different tasks throughout the year to build their sketching & drawing skills. This year they had a mini sketchbook challenge each week to try to build their awareness of detail, expertise in using different media, and to develop different methods of sketching.

They also learned how to do more technical drawings such as 1 and 2 point perspectives and scaled plans, sections & elevations.

Mini Sketchbooks

Each week the students are given a prompt for their mini sketchbooks to help them to develop their observation & sketching skills.

Architectural Model Making.

Architectural models are a key tool in helping designers to understand the light & space they are working with. They are also great tools to showcase a potential design. Our students worked really hard to build accurate, neat models for a number of their projects across the year.

Villa Savoye.

The students were asked to develop a case study of the Villa Savoye as part of their model making unit this year. They researched the building and created hand rendered sketches & perspective drawings. They added the sketches to their research on the history of the building and created these amazing little booklets to go with their models.

Project One - Student Accommodation

For their first big project of the year, the students were tasked with developing some new state of the art student accommodation for the University of St Andrews. Students were asked to consider the wider impacts of the Covid19 pandemic in their designs and to create sustainable, self contained units that would be easy to maintain. The students put so much thought and care into their designs and came up with some truly fantastic ideas to meet the brief.

Project 2 - St Andrew’s Church, Lochgelly.

Fife Historic Buildings Trust recently held a public charrette for a disused church building in the centre of Lochgelly. This process engaged local people to help to decide how the church could be redesigned to add the greatest benefit to the local area.

Our students mimicked this process, and developed their own sustainable concept for what could be done with the space. They then developed the idea right through the design process and ended up with the most fantastic final projects.

Project 3 - Ravenscraig Park Public Toilet.

The current Covid19 pandemic has had a significant impact on our students and so for our final project this year we put Covid19 at the heart of our design.

The students were tasked with designing a public toilet for Ravenscraig Park in Kirkcaldy. They needed to consider how to make a sustainable, inclusive public amenity that encouraged people to use it. This project got students to think about the practicalities of public toilets - how are they maintained, how to limit the impact of antisocial behaviour etc. The students really put lots of creative thought into this project and came up with some truly fabulous design solutions.

Toilet Twinning

While investigating the importance of adequate toilet provision for our Ravenscraig Park project, the students gained an understanding for how access to sanitation is vital in controlling the spread of disease and avoiding premature death around the world.

The students decided to raise money to build a toilet in Zambia by ‘twinning’ our toilet in college with a project working to improve sanitation in the country. The students completed a beach clean of Ravenscraig Beach to earn the money!
